Swedish Relaxation Massage
Overview
Swedish massage utilizes a system of long strokes, kneading, and friction techniques on the superficial muscle layers along with active and passive joint movements to increase relaxation, blood circulation, and general body awareness. Developed in 1812 by Pehr Henrik Ling at the University of Stockholm, the Swedish method has grown to become the world’s most popular form of full body massage.
People not used to receiving massages may prefer this approach for its gentler form when compared to many other deep-kneading tissue manipulation techiques. Used primarily for relaxation, Swedish massage is also applied therapeutically to warm up tissues in preparatoin for deeper work.
